What is a User-Agent?

In our last User-Agent Analysis blog in April 2018 we outlined the following:

  • What is a User-Agent?
  • Three key components identified in a User-Agent
  • How Does Device Detection work?

We currently have a device database of >50,000 unique device models. These device types include Smartphones, Tablets, Feature Phones, Consoles, eReaders, MediaHubs, Smartwatches and TVs.

Viewing our traffic over the past years we are seeing a shift to increasing volumes of User-Agent traffic being reported from Smart TVs, MediaHubs and Consoles compared to the established strongholds of smartphones and tablets. In order to provide optimal user experience, it is as important as ever for companies to understand how users are accessing their content online!

At 51Degrees accuracy is an important factor of our Device Detection product. To make sure all data points are accurate we take data from vendor sources and other strategic partnerships (so no scraping of 3rd party websites or websites containing leaked information). To improve the accuracy of detection we receive usage data from specific sectors to help continually grow and validate our database of devices, browsers, and operating systems. Our solution is trusted by over 1.5 million websites and companies such as Adform, Basis Technologies, Dynata (Research Now), EPAM, Open Text Corporation, Sitecore, and more.
