The Samsung Galaxy S3 is still shipped with version 4.0.4 of the Android operating system, otherwise known as 'Ice Cream Sandwich'. Since the S3's release back in May 2012, there have been a number of updates to the Android operating system.

In November 2012, Samsung rolled out Android 4.1 'Jelly Bean' to S3 devices in the United States and selected European countries. It was then expanded to international markets in December 2013. Over the initial 2 months, 75% of Galaxy S3 users updated their device to the newer Android version 4.1. Adoption of the new OS version took a further 6 months to reach 90% penetration, increasing each month at an average rate of 3.31%.

Support for the iPhone 3G was dropped when iOS 5 was released, meaning some models of iPhone were not able to download the latest OS updates. As more people upgrade their iPhone model to the latest versions, we can see a larger overall adoption rate of the most recent iOS versions.

Earlier this year, Samsung elected to skip the 4.2.2 update and go straight to 4.3 instead. However, the recent OS update has caused problems for S3 users and the update was suspended. Will the early update problems have a lasting effect on 4.3 adoption rates?
