Will tablet web traffic continue to grow steadily in 2014?

Chart of the Week

Earlier this week Gartner predicted a 53.4% growth for tablets by the end of this year. This week, 51Degrees takes a look at global web traffic originating from PC, tablet, smartphone and feature phone devices over the last 20 months.

Global Web Traffic - Breakdown by Device Type

Over the last 20 months, tablet and smartphone devices have chipped away at the web share of desktop and non-mobile devices. This was up until last month, where desktop web traffic took a slight upturn, seemingly at the expense of smartphone and feature phone web traffic. Could growth in the 'ultramobile' product category be off-setting the traditional PC decline?

Tablet's seemed to be the only device type unaffected by the small rise in desktop web traffic, showing a steady increase of 0.13% in September 2013. Over the past 20 months tablet web traffic share has increased by an average rate of 0.26%. If this continues over the next 6 months, tablets could get close to a 10% share of total web traffic.

With an end-of-year increase in tablet sales predicted, will we see a web share spike in the early months of 2014?
