Is the Set Top Box Dead?

I’m looking forward to joining the IET and BBC at next week’s John Logie Baird Lecture to debate whether the set top box is dead. The event takes place at the BBC’s Media Village (ex Television Centre) on the 3rd October.

The Mad World Of Set Top Boxes – Part 2

The remote is already in your pocket

At IBC 2013 in Amsterdam, there are a small but significant number of exhibitors focused on remote controls. The most significant innovation is the use of Bluetooth to replace infrared and placing a microphone into the control to enable voice control of the TV and set top box. Some vendors have also turned the control into a pointing device such that it can be used to move an on screen cursor. Other than these, the remote control doesn't look like its set to change.

Why pretend to be a mobile phone?

The number of vendors large and small promoting web enabled set top boxes will not escape the attention of those attending the IBC show in Amsterdam 2013. Manufacturers are all showing web browser enabled devices. Most of the operating systems and related browser software comes from the mobile world with Android by far and away the most popular operating system coupled with the Chrome Mobile browser.
