DeviceAtlas Patent Opposed

51Degrees leads opposition to Afilias European patent

In July 2017, after eight long years of deliberation, the European Patent Office (EPO) finally granted Afilias Technologies Ltd patent EP2245836B1 "Determining a property of a communication device". 51Degrees, the company I founded and still run, opposed this patent not because we think it affects any of our current products but because it attempts to monopolise the earlier WURFL (Wireless Universal Resource FiLe) solution now run by ScientiaMobile along with other well-known computing techniques.

API Version 3.2 Update for Developers

Details of features and release schedule for API updates

We’re always working hard to improve the 51Degrees APIs making them easier to use, consume fewer resources and provide new features. Version 3.2 combines many incremental changes. Highlights included in all API variants are:

  • New version 3.2 data file is 25% smaller than version 3.1. Data file size is no longer proportional to supported Device Combinations and Signatures. As a result V3.2 data files will grow at a slower rate than V3.1.
  • C APIs now join PHP, .NET and Java in supporting multiple HTTP headers, not just User-Agent. The developer no longer needs to consider which headers to use.
  • Cache structures are now all memory limited rather than time limited resulting in a more consistent memory profile.
  • Information relating to false positives such as rank information is returned more quickly.
  • Github is the master repository for all API source code. Mirrors will be maintained on Codeplex, Sourceforge and other locations.

Apple Standalone on Device Detection

Exposing the crippling solution used to detect iPhone and iPad models

Device vendors as varied as the mighty Samsung, to brands like Pantech and Micromax all recognise the importance of identifying different device models when accessing web sites. However, Apple do not fully support this approach.

Some device detection solutions have tried to address the problem by artificially stressing the iPhone or iPad to determine how quickly its processor can complete iterative tasks. Understanding how the device performs under stress provides an indication as to the CPU available and therefore the model of the device. The approach can yield more information but ironically at the expense of user experience as the page load time increases and the battery is drained more rapidly.

If every web site were to stress iPhones and iPads to gain model information the web would slow down for Apple users. This isn’t in Apple’s interest. However, if Apple make a simple change the problem can be avoided.
