Job Title: Web Developer

Salary: c.£35k plus Bonus

51Degrees is a rapidly expanding, central Reading based technology company. We are now seeking an experienced front-end web developer to support this rapid expansion.

51Degrees is the market leading solution for the delivery of high performance highly optimised web experiences to smartphone, tablets, feature phones and TVs. More than 1.5 million web sites including eBay, IBM, Microsoft, T-Mobile and Unilever use our fast, accurate and easy to implement solutions.

Core to our business is a series of open source APIs distributed via GitHub, Codeplex and Sourceforge integrated into leading CMS and frameworks which enable a web site to understand the capabilities of the varied devices that are accessing them. Typical use cases include adapting content for different devices and enhancing web site analytics solutions.

Building on our rapid expansion during 2014 we’re looking for an exceptional front end web developer skilled in HTML, CSS and JavaScript to work in our talent development team. The main responsibilities are:

  1. As new W3C drafts are released and browser vendors implement new features, maintain the core product with relevant feature tests and capabilities.
  2. Advocate 51Degrees to browser vendors, web and front end developer communities via blog posts, forum posts, web seminars, meetings and presentations.
  3. Maintain the Front-end of 51Degrees web site ensuring best practice techniques are used.
  4. Provide 2nd line assistance to colleagues and customers.
  5. On a rota basis provide out of hours on call customer technical support.

As a member of our product team you’ll need to demonstrate excellent team working skills and an ability to learn quickly.

The role would ideally suit an outgoing individual with excellent understanding of Front end Web technologies and superb written communication skills. Experience writing JavaScript libraries, use of the aysnc Script attribute, and open source would be a distinct advantage. Knowledge of the latest W3C working drafts and web browser features is essential. Experience with traditional back-end programming languages such as C#, Java, PHP and C is desirable as are graphic design skills, but not essential. Understanding the nature of small growing businesses and adopting a self-starting approach is vital.

51Degrees is the market leading solution for the delivery of high performance highly optimised web experiences to smartphone, tablets, feature phones and TVs. More than 1.5 million web sites including eBay, IBM, Microsoft, T-Mobile and Unilever use our fast, accurate and easy to implement solutions.

Building on our rapid expansion during 2014 we’re looking for an experienced geeky back-end developer skilled in C# and one or more of Java, PHP or C to work in our talent development team. The main responsibilities are:

  1. Maintain APIs and expand them to support new technologies such as Ruby, or integrate them into 3rd party products such as Magento.
  2. Maintain our internal data management and data collection systems written in C#.
  3. Work with Amazon Web Servers and Azure to build high volume data processing applications capable of handling billions of queries per day.
  4. Advocate our tools and design approach to developers via blog and forum posts.
  5. Provide 2nd line assistance to colleagues and customers.
  6. On a rota basis provide out of hours on call customer technical support.

As a member of our small product team you’ll need to demonstrate excellent team working skills and an ability to learn quickly.

The role would ideally suit a professional programmer with a thorough understanding of first principle computing either self-taught or via formal education. Working experience of programming concepts such as pointers, regular expressions, multi-threading and optimised data structures is essential. A willingness to learn new skills quickly as the business expands to support more technology platforms is important. Experience with front-end web technologies such as HTML, CSS and JavaScript is desirable but not essential. Understanding the nature of small growing businesses and adopting a self-starting approach is vital.
